Tough - How Children Succeed

Grit, curiosity, And the hidden power of character
By Paul Tough

To help chronically low performing but intelligent students, educators and parents must first recognize that character is at least as important as intellect.

How do you help children acquire the focus and persistence they will need for longer-term more abstract goals?

Divide the mechanics of achievement into two separate dimensions:

motivation and volition - You have to have both

Volition is willpower, self-control

The labor market values the kind of internal motivation required to try hard on a test even when there is no external reward for doing well.

These go-getter students  are conscientious.

Conscientiousness is the trait that best predicts workplace success

People high in conscientiousness get better grades in high school and college; they commit fewer crimes; and they stay married longer. They live longer – and not just because they smoke and drink less. The have fewer strokes, lower blood pressure, and a lower incidence of Alzheimer's disease.

Corporate America's rulers wanted to staff their offices with bland and reliable sheep, so they created the school system that selected for those traits.

According to Roberts research, people who Score high on conscientiousness tend to share certain characteristics: they're orderly, hard-working, reliable, and respectful of social norms.  The most important ingredient of conscientiousness is self control.

Grit is known as the passionate commitment to a single mission and unswerving dedication to achieve that mission.

Grit is self-discipline wedded to a dedicated pursuit of a goal.

We need character Programs that focus on performance character with strengths  like zest, optimism, self-control, social intelligence, curiosity, gratitude.

Is PBIS  a moral character program or performance character program?

Performance character focuses on traits like grit, self-control, zest, social intelligence, gratitude, optimism, and curiosity.

Moral character programs focus on treat everyone with respect and be aware of other peoples feelings and find ways to help those whose feelings have been hurt...

When people think of good character they think are you fair? Are you honest in dealings with other people? Are you a cheater? They don't think are you a hard worker? Are you tenacious?
